State Sen. Suzanne Williams involved in fatal car crash in Texas

The Aurora Sentinel
AURORA | State Sen. Suzanne Williams, D-Aurora, was injured during a head-on car crash Sunday night on a highway in Hartley County, Texas, which resulted in one fatality.
Williams, 65, was treated and released as of late Monday, and was wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident.
Brianna Michelle Gomez, 30, a passenger of the GMC that Williams crashed into, later died from her injuries, and was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash. She was pregnant and a cesarean section was performed at the hospital. The baby boy was listed in critical condition at the hospital, and Gomez was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m. Monday.
Williams’ husband, Ed, said he drove from Denver to Texas yesterday to be with her.
“She’s doing alright, but our son isn’t,” he said. “Our two grandkids are out of the hospital now.”
Calls to Williams’ cell phone were not returned.
Local Democrat Party officials confirmed that Williams was involved in the crash, but they had no other information.
On Sunday at 5:30 p.m. mountain time, a 2010 Honda CRV driven by Williams was traveling northbound on U.S. 385 when it veered into southbound traffic for an unknown reason, according to a news release sent from the Texas Department of Public Safety on Monday afternoon.
Williams’ vehicle crashed into a 2003 GMC Yukon driven by Eric James Gomez, of Amarillo, Texas, in the center of the roadway.
The location of the crash was near Channing, Texas, about 40 miles northwest of Amarillo.
Williams’ car came to rest on the southbound shoulder facing southeast. The GMC came to rest on its driver’s side. All occupants of the two vehicles were taken to Northwest Texas Hospital.
Williams’ son, Todd, 41, who was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle, was stable at the hospital.
Grandchildren Tristan Williams, 3, and Tyler Williams, 7, were stable at the hospital. Williams’ son and grandchildren live in Denver.
Eric Gomez, the driver of the GMC, was treated and released from the hospital, and two other passengers, Mali Gomez, 6, and Eleri Gomez, 4, were also treated and released.

  1. This is a sad situation, but no one is above reproach. As far as the accident, I will hold my comments until all the facts are released. However, I have issues with her character. She is a state senator; thus, she is a leader. One of her agendas was that people wear seatbelts which I agree. My children always wear their seat belts, period! If you advocate people wearing seatbelts, then, you lead by example. You make sure at least the children in your vehicle while you are driving have their seatbelts on or in appropriate child restraint. To have your 3 and 7 year old grandchildren in your vehicle unrestrained is inexcusable. Now, if her son chooses not to wear his seatbelt, that is his choice; he is an adult. Then, she veers off the road and hits a vehicle head on. After the accident, she tries to put the 3 year old child into a car seat. (1/5/11 Denver Post Article). Why? You do not move someone after an accident where they were not wearing a seat belt, especially a three year old child. You do not know if they have internal injuries. You could make the injuries worse if you move the child. It seems to me that she was trying to make it look like the child was in a child restraint at the time of the accident. So in the moment of crisis, it appears a politician is concerned with covering their behind. Imagine that! These are not the qualities I am looking for in politician: hypocrisy and cover up. I think she should do the right thing and resign.
